Hidden Gems Literacy is a growing Tucson nonprofit dedicated to improving reading and writing outcomes for elementary school students by partnering with schools and nonprofits.
We are looking for a creative, dependable Social Media & Storytelling Coordinator to help us document and share our journey as we grow. This is an ideal opportunity for a University of Arizona student studying communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, digital media, or a related field who wants hands-on experience telling the story of a young nonprofit making an impact in the Tucson community.
This is not just a graphic-design or work-from-home social media position. We need someone who enjoys being out in the community—visiting schools, attending literacy programs and events, talking with people, capturing authentic moments, and turning those moments into engaging social content.
Examples of what you'll do:
- Create and publish a minimum of 3 social media posts per week across Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, with the exact content schedule developed together.
- Create a mix of Reels/short-form video, photos, stories, and traditional posts.
- Attend selected Hidden Gems Literacy programs, school events, meetings, celebrations, and/or community activities to capture photos and video.
- Conduct quick, informal video interviews with our founder, teachers, principals, parents, community partners, and others involved in our work.
- Help document HGL's story as it unfolds—from launching new school partnerships and literacy programs to celebrating students and teachers.
- Turn raw photos, videos, quotes, and everyday moments into polished, engaging content.
- Help maintain a consistent HGL voice and visual identity across platforms.
- Look for stories worth telling rather than waiting for someone to hand you every post idea.
- Maintain an organized library of photos and video that HGL can use for future storytelling, fundraising, and outreach.
We're looking for someone who:
- Is a strong communicator and natural storyteller.
- Is comfortable taking photos and shooting/editing short-form video on a smartphone.
- Understands—or is eager to learn—Instagram Reels and social media content creation.
- Is comfortable approaching and interviewing people.
- Can write clear, engaging captions.
- Is reliable and able to post consistently.
- Has good judgment and understands that working around schools and children requires professionalism and respect for privacy/photo permissions.
- Is based in Tucson and has reliable transportation to attend occasional in-person events.
- Is enthusiastic about education, literacy, children, nonprofits, or community impact.
Experience with Canva, social media management platforms, photography, videography, or journalism is a plus, but we care more about creativity, initiative, reliability, and storytelling ability than having an extensive résumé.
Compensation: $400–$600 per month, depending on experience and the final scope of responsibilities. This is a flexible, part-time position. Posting expectations will be established together, with a minimum of three posts per week across 2–3 platforms.
