Unity and Engagement Committee

As a former journalist, English/Spanish interpreter, and as a staff member at the University of Arizona since 2012, one of my core beliefs is that all voices, needs, and perspectives have a right to be articulated and heard. Above all, I believe we must treat ourselves and each other with respect, kindness, and compassion. 

During my time as a graduate student, I've maintained an interest in using my research to bring awareness to social inequality and reduce prejudice and stigma towards marginalized groups. My dissertation explores as novel way in which media messages can be used to improve intergroup attitudes and promote allyship behaviors. 

I am from the small border town of Douglas, Arizona, which intersects with Agua Prieta, Sonora. That said, I have spent my whole life trying to consistently navigate between two distinct cultures. This personal connection that I have has fueled into passion to do whatever I can do to ensure that all experiences and voices are heard in any environment I find myself in. During my time as a graduate student, I especially considered this in my research toward the important of media representation and marginalized groups. 

As an intergroup scholar dedicated to fostering peaceful relationships among various social groups, I prioritize embracing different perspectives and participating in civil discussions to promote genuine intergroup harmony. I approach this topic through research on how we achieve intergroup understanding in our social contexts.
