Communication and Marketing Intern

The Frances McClelland Institute for Children, Youth and Families (FMI) serves as a research and outreach institute in the Norton School of Human Ecology. We bridge research and practice by building innovative teams of scientists committed to tackling the most pressing issues facing families today, partnering to put our research into the hands of families, community members, and practitioners who are on the front lines of building family and youth resilience, and educating the next generation of scholars and community leaders. We use research to improve the lives of children, youth, and families.

Responsibilities 

As our communications and marketing intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience developing marketing strategies, managing content, and supporting event planning for both on- and off-campus audiences. Responsibilities include:

  • Helping coordinate the annual Frances McClelland Vision Awards (October), which honors community leaders and raises funds to support our mission.
  • Creating and posting original content for social media platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook).
  • Designing visuals for newsletters, digital publications, and the FMI website.
  • Promoting FMI-hosted events and assisting with outreach and community engagement.
  • Helping communicate research-informed content to the public by creating posts, graphics, or stories that highlight FMI’s work and partnerships in ways that are accessible and engaging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across diverse audiences
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Experience with Canva and/or Adobe Creative Suite
  • Familiarity with managing social media content
  • Interest in science communication and community-focused outreach
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively

Location

This is a hybrid position. Most work will be done in McClelland Park with some opportunities for virtual work. With advance notice, interns may be asked to attend events off-campus.

Time Commitment

Interns will work on average 9 hours/week (135 hours/semester for 3-units of credit). This is an unpaid internship. We will expect a consistent weekly schedule that is determined according to the intern’s availability and course schedule.

American Advertising Federation - Tucson (AAFT) Internship

AAFT College Internship Program

The American Advertising Federation-Tucson (AAFT) serves as the premier industry association for marketing, advertising, and creative professionals. AAFT and the Tucson Advertising Federation Education Foundation (TAFEF) actively support advertising education and promote marketing-related opportunities for students in the Tucson area, aiming to inspire them to build their careers locally. AAFT and TAFEF have an endowed scholarship fund that supports annual internships with member companies/organizations for students pursuing marketing-related degrees.

Each year, applications for the AAFT Spring College Internship Program will open at the beginning of the University of Arizona’s Fall semester. Applications for student interns and AAFT host companies will be due the first week of November each year. The internship will formally start at the beginning of the student’s Spring semester.

The AAFT College Internship Program is a PAID program and requires all students to work a minimum of 10 hours per week for a 16-week semester (with a minimum hourly rate of $16/hr). Through a competitive application and interview process, eligible students are matched with an AAFT member company/organization (e.g., iHeart Media, KVOA, Caliber Group, etc.), and subsequently interviewed/selected by that specific organization.

Student Internship Criteria:

All students should be a junior, senior, or graduate student AND must be studying a communication-related field to participate. Students must be enrolled at least half time at an accredited College or University with emphasis in advertising or marketing (Marketing, Media Arts, Digital Arts, Communication, Journalism, Graphic Design, Web Design, Photography, Illustration, or Visual Communications).

Students must:

  1. Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  2. Complete all work assignments given by the employing company.
  3. Follow the standards of professional practice set by the employing company.
  4. Be available to work on-site in the greater Tucson area.**

**While most internships are in-person opportunities, some companies may offer hybrid or remote opportunities.

Biomedical Engineering Student Worker Position

About Biomedical Engineering: 

Students and faculty in this major work to help people by undertaking crucial projects including early cancer detection, creating wearable health monitors, analyzing medical imaging and much more. The Biomedical Engineering department is looking for an exceptional student to join our team in the Health Sciences Innovation Building. This student worker position that will be an excellent experience to build your resume and add real-world projects to your portfolio. Students will be able to expand their skills in marketing, communications, event planning and multi-media skills, including graphic design and video. 

About the role

The intern will work directly with members of the Biomedical Engineering team in a variety of areas, from communications to graphic design and events to organizing the department’s visual boards. Some tasks you may be assisting with include but are not limited to: social media content, web content, multimedia, print and digital marketing, newsletters, and promotional collateral. You will also assist with biomedical engineering event and tour activities, with responsibilities to include assisting with event set-up, operating the event registration table, taking images and photos at events, and assisting with event promotion and metric reporting. There will be general department duties as well, such as checking students in for their advising appts., keeping department bulletin boards up to date and ordering office supplies as needed.

- Must be a sophomore or junior with at least 1-2 years remaining at UA

· Must exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP:

The Marketing & Communications Associate will play a pivotal role in shaping and disseminating the public communications of Council Member Perez. This role is ideal for a creative self-starter who understands the importance of voice and timing in civic storytelling. The intern will support both executive communications and marketing efforts, ensuring that the Council Member's voice and messages effectively reach and resonate with the Ward 5 community and the greater Tucson area.

ABOUT COUNCIL MEMBER ROCQUE PEREZ:

Council Member Rocque Perez was appointed to represent Tucson's Ward 5 in May 2025, becoming one of the youngest individuals to serve on the City Council and one of few to assume office and openly identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. A Tucson native, Perez brings a strong background in education advocacy, having served as Executive Director of the Metro Education Commission. His work has centered on expanding access to education, promoting healthy living, and advancing civic participation. Ad Astra STEAM Media is currently preparing for the October launch of our newest animated project, Entre2Mundos, and we’re looking to bring on passionate and creative Undergraduate UofA students as summer interns. Our BIO5 Institute Ambassador Internship program is a unique two-semester opportunity open to all University of Arizona undergraduate majors.
