Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach out to your Academic Advisor to discuss what your options might be. The COMM Department does not utilize waitlists, and you may not have the opportunity to enroll in that course. You should ask your advisor for an alternative and continue to monitor the course to see if a seat opens. Pay attention to the Dates and Deadlines to determine if it’s too late to enroll or if additional steps need to be taken to enroll in a course.

Every undergraduate degree program requires satisfaction of the Mid-Career Writing Assessment (MCWA). The MCWA is based on students' performance in their second semester English composition course. A grade of  B or higher in the student’s second semester English course will satisfy this University writing proficiency requirement.  Students earning less than a B grade in their second semester composition course must take a course or attend writing workshops to improve their composition skills so they can meet the writing standards of their major department.

If you did not earn a grade of B or higher in your second semester English composition course, see your major Academic Advisor to find out how you can satisfy the MCWA requirement.

Yes, every COMM student must declare a minor. You will need a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in your minor in order to graduate from the UA. A list of minors available to declare can be found here: https://ua-trellis.my.site.com/Public/s/advisors-by-minor

Students who wish to declare Communication as their major are encouraged, but not required to have taken or be enrolled in COMM 101. To declare COMM as your major, please visit: https://comm.arizona.edu/major

You can view your Advisement Report by logging on to UAccess, click on the Advising Tab, and then Advisement Report. When the page loads, click on “View as PDF”. Make sure to check in with your Academic Advisor if you have questions about your Advisement Report and to make sure you’re on track.

COMM Major students are required to complete MATH 107 (Understanding Data) or higher for their degree and SBS 200 (Introduction to Statistics to Social Sciences) for their COMM Major.

For students admitted to the University prior to Fall 2012 and who complete COMM 228 prior to Fall 2013, the math requirement is MATH 109C (College Algebra with Data Analysis) OR MATH 112 (College Algebra Concepts and Applications) or higher.

COMM 101, COMM 228, and COMM 300 are the core courses for the COMM major. Students must earn a minimum of a C grade in COMM 101 and COMM 228, with a combined average of 2.5 or better. This means one grade must be an A or B.

Theory Eligibility means that you have successfully completed your math requirement, COMM 101, COMM 228 and COMM 300 with the required grades. Once this has been accomplished, you are eligible to take all COMM theory classes.

Students need a 2.5 GPA between COMM 101 and 228, a B and C grade combination, minimum, to become eligible for COMM theory classes. Note that both 101 and 228 are restricted to a maximum of two attempts. If you try both courses twice and don't earn the 2.5 GPA, you will need to change your major.

While you may be able to get into COMM Theory classes before completing the COMM core classes with the required grades, you will not be allowed to graduate with a COMM major without meeting the requirements for the COMM core classes.

If you declare a second Bachelor of Arts (BA) Major, you are a double major student. You can declare a second major in place of a minor for your degree.

When declaring a second major, meet with the Academic Advisor for that program, and make sure you work with all your advisors when planning your academics.

Students may join our clubs and organizations, apply to study abroad, or participate in research opportunities!
